Getting to Kefalonia

Arriving on Kefalonia, the largest of the Ionian Islands, is an adventure in itself. Ferries from the Greek mainland to Kefalonia are not just a means of transport; they are often a delightful part of the journey. My favorite routes offer stunning views and a taste of the local maritime culture.

Bringing Your Car with You

One of the best ways to explore Kefalonia is to bring your vehicle. Ferries from the mainland, particularly from Killini and Patras, accommodate cars. Leaving from Killini, which is about a 3.5-hour drive from Athens, you’ll hop on a ferry to Poros. The journey takes about an hour and provides expansive views of the blue waters and nearby islands, with seagulls circling overhead and the smell of salty sea air. A round-trip ticket costs around 22 euros for a car and driver, which is quite reasonable.

Quick and Convenient Options

An alternative way to reach Kefalonia is via the ferry from Fiskardo to Ithaca. If you want a faster way to the island’s northern reaches, this is an excellent choice. The ferry leaves every hour or so during peak season, with a ticket priced at about 10 euros. Although the ferry ride lasts just 30 minutes, the views of the rugged coastline are enchanting, providing a sneak peek at what’s to come.

Experiencing the Harbor Vibe

Arriving in Poros gives you the first taste of island life. The harbor is busy, full of fishing boats and the buzz of people chatting, mixed with the clacking of flip-flops on the pavement. Freshly caught fish is sold right at the waterfront, and the air is filled with the aroma of grilled octopus being prepared at nearby tavernas. It’s a feast for the senses and the perfect introduction to the island.

Traveling Light

If you prefer to travel without a vehicle, ferries from Kefalonia to Zante (Zakynthos) are another quick hop. The ride is about 50 minutes, costing around 15 euros. Here, you can enjoy the vibrant turquoise waters of the Ionian Sea as you make your way to another island, perfect for day trips if you want a little variety on your vacation.

Practical Considerations

Though the ferries are generally reliable, it’s important to keep in mind that they can get crowded during peak summer months. Arriving early is key. I learned this the hard way when I barely squeezed onto a ferry one August morning, watching the latecomers regretfully turn back. Aim to arrive at least 30 minutes prior to your departure time.

Dining Options onboard

While most ferries have a small café on board, don’t set your expectations too high. You’ll find basic snacks and drinks at reasonable prices, like sandwich platters at around 5–7 euros each. It’s always a good idea to grab a snack before boarding. The local bakeries in Poros serve excellent spanakopita that travels well.

Final Thoughts

Stepping off the ferry, I felt the warm breeze and the sun on my skin, welcoming me to Kefalonia. The sights and sounds are mesmerizing, with waves gently lapping at the docks and a chorus of cicadas filling the air as the day progresses. As you embark on your ferry journey, remember that this is more than just a transfer. It’s an opportunity to soak up the beauty and ambiance of the Ionian Sea. Prepare yourself for the time of your life.
